Journal 73 – A new chance for Central and Eastern European courtiers
In my journal 68 I have written that Europe is going to its new days. It is true. A few years after the Bolsheviks revolution (1917), the Soviet Union was established (1922). Lenin died in 1924. After Lenin’s death, Joseph Stalin took power in the Soviet Union. He was a cruel dictaror, who ruled Russia for almost 3 decades until his death in 1953. Stalin’s successors were: Chruschev, Brezniew, Chernienko and Andropov. In 1985, Mikhail Gorbachev took power and after him was Boris Yeltsen. Only they both were leaders of the new generation.
Russia, as a communist country, existed from 1917 to 1991. Boris Yeltsen resolved this empire. It is true that the Soviet Union kept the hard arm many Central and Eastern European countries: Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary, DDR and Albania.
Only in 1990s, Communism collapsed as a result general offensive. This process began from Poland. Europe, this Old Continent, took a new breath. Mentioned above countries and the former Soviet republics began to build their new future. One of these countries is Poland. This transition period isn’t easy, but Poles believe in the better future and they don’t give up. It is great that after a few decades, Eastern and Central Europe joined to democratic Western civilization.

Journal 72 – Hiroshima’s tragedy the 52 anniversary
Today is August 6, 2007. All people in the world remember Hiroshima, this Japanese city on which the first atomic bomb used was dropped.
It was the summer time in the year 1945. The Second World War was over in Europe in May 9, 1945. In the Pacific Ocean WW II was still going; it Japanese didn’t surrender. In April 1945, President Delano Roosevelt passed away. Hurry Truman took power after Roosevelt’s death. The United States plane dropped a single atomic bomb on the center of the city. Three days later, the Allies dropped a second atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki. Japan surrendered to the Allied forces on September 2, 1945. The atomic bomb destroyed about 5 square miles of the city. About 100,000 people are estimated to have been killed by the bomb. Many people died later from the effects of radiation.
Hiroshima, which lies on islands formed by a river delta on the shore of the Inland Sea, was rebuilt after the war.

Journal 70 – The Century’s Decline by Wislawa Szymborska
In my previous journal I have written that the twentieth century experienced many cruel events. Right now, I would like to show you what the one of the most famous Polish poets thinks about that period. I am giving the voice to Wislawa Szymborska a winner the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1996. The title this poem is The Century’s Decline. The poem was translated by Prof. Stanislaw Baranczak from Harvard University.
The Century’s Decline
Our twentieth century was going to improve on the others.
It will never prove it now,
now that its years are numbered,
its breath is short.
Too many things have happened
that weren’t supposed to happen,
and what was supposed to come about
has not.
Happiness and spring, among other things,
were supposed to be getting closer.
Fear was expected to leave the mountains and the valleys.
Truth was supposed to hit home
before a lie.
A couple of problems weren’t going
to come up anymore;
hunger, for example,
and war, and so forth.
There was going to be respect
for helpless people’s helplessness,
trust, that kind of stuff.
Anyone who planned to enjoy the world
is now face
with a hopeless task.
Stupidity isn’t funny.
Wisdom isn’t gay.
Hope
isn’t that young girl anymore,
et cetera, alas.
God was finally going to believe
in a man both good and strong,
but good and strong
are still two different men.
“How should we live?” someone asked me in a letter.
I had meant to ask him
the same question.
Again, and as ever,
as may be seen above,
the most pressing questions
are naive ones.

Journal 69 – The cruel twentieth century
The twentieth century was one of cruelest period in the human history. This century experienced two world wars: the First World War and the Second World War. World War I was lasted from 1914 to 1918, and World War II was lasted from 1939-1945.
The Second World War began on September 1, 1939, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. During World War II, and after it’s, were killed several dozens millions people. It was estimated that the same number of people could have died because of governmental repressions against its own citizens. The Soviet Union is a good example in this cause.
Unfortunately, prognosis for XX century isn’t optimistic. Many present conflicts have a source in the previous century.

Journal 68 – Europe is going to the new days
In my previous journals I have written that life very accelerated in the last decades. I deem that an Old Continent is one of the most dynamic areas in these days. Europe is experiencing its renaissance. If we want to understand present processes in this continent, we have to go back to World War II. I will devote my next journal these problems.

Journal 67 – The Italian poet with a camera passed away
Today is date July 31, 2007. Michelangelo Antonioni, one of Italy’s most famous and influential film-makers, passed away in Rome. He was 94. Some consider that he was the cinematic father of modern alienation. Critics state that Antonioni’s best films The Adventure, 1960, and The Nigth, 1960, concern people who have lost their purpose in life despite financial success. I am interested in this problem. At the present, many people suffer for these reasons. I would like to see these movies.
Antonioni has achieved international acclaim with Blow-Up, 1966, and his first English language film The Passenger, 1975.
I didn’t know Michelangelo Antonioni before.

Journal 66 – Ingmar Bergman passed away
Today, on July 30,2007, Swedish director Ingmar Bergman, passed away at the age of 89.Bergman died at his home in Faro, Sweden. A cause of death is unknown. Woody Allen said in a 70th Bergman’s birthday, that Bergmann was probably the greatest film artist since the invention of the motion picture camera.
Bergman became famous for his complex studies of guilt, morality, and religious faith. Most of his films are highly symbolic. Bergman’s the most acclaimed films include Smiles of a Summer Night, Virgin Spring, Fanny Alexander and The Magic Lantern. The last of them has an autobiographic character.

Journal 65 – Gordon Brown visits the USA
Prime Minister Gordon Brown traveled to the United States on Sunday. Gordon Brown makes his first visit to the USA as a British new leader. Brown’s predecessor, Tony Blair, was often accused at home of being too compliant with the policies of President George Bush. Some analysts have urged Brown to be more like Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher and Winston Churchill. They both had close ties with the USA, but reminded frank about own policies.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown arrived in the USA with British foreign secretary David Miliband. Bush met Gordon and they exchanged small talk.
I have written about Gordon Brown in the journal 25.

Journal 64 - Mentally illness more and more popular nowadays
We are observing more and more the mentally ill people. I am convinced that many factors decide about this situation. One of them is more stressful and complicated life than it was a few decades ago. Our civilization very accelerated. A few decades ago our life was more stable. Right now, the young people have to undertake many new challenges which my generation didn’t experience. No one doesn’t prepare youth to a new situation. A school always was out-of-date; life was going before it.
In the past, families undertook the most educational duties. Right now, parents are very busy and they don’t have a time to care of about their children. Each next generation is smarter than previous, but the young people have more emotional deficits than their equals a few decades ago. What in the future will be? Who knows it? I think that many developed societies in the present world aren’t conscious this situation. Some scientists are warning about the future, but I have feeling that nobody hears their voices.

Journal 63 – My friends’ children
I spent my childhood in the small village. In these times, I was one of the habitants who studied at the college. My neighbor had two mentally under-developed children. The neighbor’s wife scared the assault when she was pregnant with her first child. My neighbor asked me, “Stefek, you are a well educated person, please help our children. Tell us to kinds of doctors we can go”.
I felt for them; simultaneously I knew that they didn’t understand that an undergrowth and mentally illness are two different things. We can explain it use a very simply comparison. An under-developed person is one who was rich for whole his life. However, a mentally ill person is one who was rich but he lost his wealth. It isn’t my idea. I learned it during my studies. My professor made this kind of comparison and I remembered it for whole my life.
One little explanation. Stefek is my nickname.

Journal 62 – My mother’s mental illness
We shared at the class our experience with a mental problem. I forgot about one important event in my early childhood. When I was 10 years old, my loved mother was mentally sick. She was getting on for fifty. She stayed at hospital for a few months. It was a very sad experience, because I was a very sensitive child. My father and I visited my mother many times. I remember this huge hospital complex which consisted of many buildings with black stripes. I didn’t understand then, and I don’t know now what they symbolized.
One time, when my father and I visited my mother, I brought her wild strawberry which I picked up in the forest located next to our home. When we visited my mother the next time, she felt much butter than before. It was a crucial moment in her illness. Maybe these wild strawberries which I gave her from my heart helped her for recovery. My mother got well soon and lived longer than my father. She passed away at the age of 83.
I remember my visits in the complex hospital with great clarity. I remember this sound when doors creaked and slammed. I asked my father, “Father, are there screaming the crazy people?”. When I repeated my question many times, my father lost his patience and said, “Shout up, my son”.
After a few decades, I remember these events with a big pleasure. I loved my parents and I tried to help them. I think that I was a good son. I am convinced that they pray to God in heaven for my health and success.

Journal 60 - Ben Bernanke replaced Alan Greenspan
A position chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System is very important and prestigeous. I have written before that Alan Greenspan occupied that position for 18 years. The USA is a powerful country and plays an important role in the global economic politics. Alain Greespan was a well known official in the world. Greespan's successor Ben Bernanke was appointed FRS Board's chairman only in 2006.
Ben Shalom Bernanke is 54 years old. He graduated from Harvard University. In 1979, he received a Ph.D. degree in economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). From 1985 to 2002, he served as a professor of economics at Princeton Universtiy, Stanford University, MIT and New York University. Ben Bernanke is the author of several books about economics and economic history. Bernanke became a member of the Fed's Board of Governors in 2002, and its chairman in 2006.

Journal 59 - The Federal Reserve System
Federal Reserve System (FRS) helps oversee the nation's banking system. FRS is known as the central bank in the USA. FRS assists the U.S. government in managing the economy by encoruraging economic growth and controlling inflation. The Fed performs many financial services for the federal government. The Fed has 12 Federal Reserve Banks and 25 Federal Reserve branches (FRB). All national commerical banks are required by law to be members of teh Fed.
The Fed police is directed by two main committees: the Board of Governors and the Federal Open Market Committee. The BG has 7 members appointed by the President of the United States to a 14-year term (a chairman serves for four years). The FOMC conists of the Fed governors, the predisent of the New York City FRB, and the presidents of four other FRB's.
I will not write about duties these organs, because they are broad. I am convinced that everyone who wants to understand a global economic politics should be familiar with a role how plays FRS.

Journal 57 - Bernanke's statement
The whole world was waiting for Fed Chief Ben Bernanke's statement. Who is he exactly I will write in my next journal. What Bernanke's main arguments are.
Mr. Bernanke stated that inflation will probably recede and that housing weakness might spread to slow other areas of the economy.
The dollar fell against the euro, and was flat against the Canadian dollar. Dr. Bernanke warned that a one construction slump could lead to slowing growth in the USA; the current housing problems are also weighing on the market.
Both crude oil and gold futures rose over 1% as the dollar fell against the euro. Today, traders bought gold and sold the dollar.
A little curiosity, grains jumped today: soybeans gained nearly 2% and corn rose 1,4%.

Journal 55 – The 63rd anniversary of attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler
On July 20, 1944, exactly 63 years ago, Col. Claus Stauffenberg, 1907-1944, tried unsuccessfully to assassinate German dictator Adolph Hitler. Adolph Hitler took power in 1933 and led Germany to World War II.
Stauffenberg was a colonel on the German general staff. He initially supported Hitler. Next, he like some other officers, was repelled by Nazi brutally and anti-Semitism. In 1943, Stauffenberg was badly wounded during the North African campaign. He was removed from active service and reassigned to the reserve army staff in Berlin.
Later, Stauffenberg became one of the chief member’s conspiracies against Hitler. He was one of them who planned to kill Hitler. On July 20, 1944, Stauffenberg planted a bomb in Hitler’s headquarters in Rastenberg. The bomb exploded but Hitler wasn’t killing. Stauffenberg and a few other officers, member of conspiracy, were executed that evening.
This village where that operation happened is located in my region in Poland. The Polish name this town is Gierloz. I visited this historical place many times.

Journal 54 – The observer visited our class
Yesterday was July 19, 2007. We had ordinary but a little different classes, because the observer visited us. An observer is a person who watches how lessons are going. He mainly values teacher’s job. He is interested in what kind of methods a teacher uses, how he explains a new material and how he helps students to achieve the proper skills. It is good if students are active.
After a practical finish, observer and a teacher analyze classes. A teacher should first explain what kinds of goals classes had, why he used these and not other methods, what kinds of mistakes he made etc.
I am convinced that our observer was very happy, because Anita is an excellent teacher. Anita, we wish you an A plus. We love you!

Journal 49 – The Polish president will come to the USA
Today is July 15,2007. The Polish president, Lech Kaczynski, will come to the USA. He will discuss a U.S. plane to place a missile defense base on Polish soil. It is a crucial moment for both, Polish and American Presidents’; because a day after Russia froze a key European arms control treaty in apparent anger over the plan. The USA wants to build a missile defense shield in central Europe (Poland and the Czech Republic). This shield would protect most of the continent from long-range missile strikes from Iran. The USA plants to place 10 interceptors in Poland and the radar station in the Czech Republic.
Presidents G. Bush and Lech Kaczynski are also expected to discuss their countries’ alliance in Afghanistan and Iraq. Poland has there 900 troops.
I have just written in one of my previous journals, that Polish President will honor former President Ronald Reagan with one of Poland’s highest distinctions. President L. Kaczynski will hand in this distinction Mrs. Nancy Reagan President Reagan’s wife.

Journal 47 - Poles intend to remove monuments from the Communist area
Law and Justice, the Polish governing party, presented a draft law encouraging local authorities to remove monuments and street names that glorify communist rule.
Kaczynski’s conservative and nationalist government wants to purge public life of former communists and symbols, which remain of Poles submission to Russia. The new law will take effect in a few months. The state will cover the costs of removing monuments and changing names. It will be same exceptions, such as for cemeteries and monuments honoring Soviet soldiers who died in World War II.
There will remain historically valuable buildings. One of them is Warsaw landmark Stalin-era Palace of Culture and Science. It was a special gift of the Soviet comrades to the Polish friends. This huge construction was structured from 1953 to 1955. The Russian Capital, Moscow, has had seven very similar buildings. In the former Soviet Union all had to be huge. It had have testified about supremacy communism over capitalism. I will devote a separate journal to this unique construction.

Journal 44 – Some general considerations
I only compared some manners which are obligated at my country and the USA. I consider, if we compare customs, manners and other human behaviors at the modern human civilization, we cannot value which of them are better or worse. We only can explain these kinds cultural events and to try to understand them.
I think that our world is interesting and beautiful because of its variety. It is like a flower-bed which consists of many different species of flowers. Thanks it, it is rich and colorful. If people from different parts of the world will strive to know and understand each other, than a life on our planet, which named the Earth, will be safer, more comfortable and successful.
Education can play a very important role on this area. Schools provide young generation knowledge and skills which will need in their future lives. Our personality consists of three main areas: cognitive, behavioral and emotional. Our schools neglect third of them. Our modern world experiences many negative phenomenons. Violence and drugs are only some examples from them. We develop intellect and skills, but not develop feelings. I consider that schools, especially the public one, don’t care about it; parents don’t have a time; however a church cannot do it competently.
As result, people are smarter and more skilled but they an emotional sphere their personality is neglected. Civilization at the beginning XXI century is very advanced, but human feelings don’t follow for its. It can be reason many conflicts and wars.
It is only outline, because these problems can be topics for many journals and even essays.

Journal 43 – Some my habits at the school
I worked as a dean assistant to full time students for over 10 years. In Poland full time students called “daily students”; there are evening students and weekend students, too.
When a young girl visited my office, I used to stand up and pointed a place where she could sit. It was important because our department prepared future teachers.

Journal 42 – Some manners at schools
A few year ago, students at Polish schools, including high schools, were standing up when teachers coming to classes. I don’t know how right now is, because changes running very fast. That kind of behavior testified about students respect for teachers. In this way students were greeting teachers, too. When teachers asked students to do oral tests, they were obligated to stand up, too.
Still, is unthinkable that a student could talk with a teacher and keeps his hands in the pockets. If a student wants to talk with a teacher, he should stand up.
When I first time, in the USA, saw a student who was sitting and talking with a teacher it shocked me. It happened at the class during the break. Right now, I became accustomed to these kinds of situations.

Journal 41 – Men and women behave with one another
I Poland, different than in the USA, is necessary for a man to open a door for a woman.
If a man welcomes with friends by handshaking, he should handshake a woman hand first. If he behaves differently, he misbehaves. Still, many men kiss women hands. It isn’t obligate, especially among a young generation colleague, but it usually is an evidence of good manners. We can see, how before of the meeting the Polish Minister council, Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski kisses women’s hands. When the Polish president, Lech Kaczynski, visited Germany and met the German chancellor, Angela Markel, he kissed her hand.

Journal 40 – Written and unwritten rules
A set of rules which a nation has can be written or unwritten. Laws are formal written rules. I cannot write about a law rules in my journals, because only an expert can do it. I would like to tell you about informal rules, which often called “manners” or “etiquette”. Again, perforce, I will write only about some manners which are obligatory in my native country. I will emphasize similarities and differences between some Polish and American manners.

Journal 39 – Every nation has a set of rules
The paper which Anita has given us, 9, Negative Prefixes, is very interesting, because two reasons: vocabulary and the contents. It provoked me expressed point of view in some questions.
I consider that the first sentence consists of the main idea of that essay. The author said that, “Every nation has a set of rules; either written or unwritten which determines how people act with each other”.
I am sorry; I will continue my considerations in the next journal.

Journal 38 – Pavarotti’s short biography
Luciano Pavarotti was born in 1935, in Modena, Italy. As a young boy, Pavarotti became known as a member of his town’s soccer team. His mother, Adele, worked at a tobacco factory. Luciano studied to become an elementary school teacher and later an insurance agent. He did well and enjoyed both of these professions. But he dreamed to become a professional tenor. Luciano’s dream came true.

Journal 36 – The richest man in the world
If you think that Bill Gates is still the richest man in the world, you are wrong. A Mexican telecoms tycoon, Carlos Slimi, is the world’s richest person. Carlos Slim, 67, has amassed personal wealth of about 67 billion dollars. More than half of his wealth can be attributed to his 33% holding in mobile phone group America Mobil. It is interesting that on the list published a month ago, Carlos Slim was the third richest man in the world with a fortune of 49 billion dollars, behind Microsoft founder Bill Gates worth 56 billion dollars, and Warren Buffett, worth 52 billion dollars. Slim’s fortune have climbed 19 billion dollars in just 12 months. Carlos Slim is a son of Lebanese immigrants.
Slim’s fortune is in stark contrast of Mexico’s population. In Mexico, the average income per capita is about 7,000 dollars. In this country more than 45% of the population lives in poverty. Slim’s fortune is nearly equal to 8% of Mexico’s GDP. It is unbelievable! Mexico is a big country. Carlos Slim has pledged 4 billion dollars into philanthropic foundation. Gates and Buffett have donated tens of billions of dollars.

Journal 35 – Saudi Arabia’s national government
Saudi Arabia is a monarchy under the Al Saudi ruling family. The king holds executive and legislative powers. He also holds the title Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques: Great Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina. The king is assisted in running the day-to-day affairs of the government by the Council of Ministers. The king heads the council and serves as a prime minister. He appoints and dismisses the members of the council and he can overrule all their decision.
Saudi Arabia has a Consultative Council. It consists of a chairman and 150 members. A chairman and all members are appointed by the king. The council advises the monarch and can propose legislation. But the monarch makes all final decisions. Saudi Arabia has no written constitution. In 1992 was decided, that the constitution of Saudi Arabia is the Qur’an and Sunnach. They make up the Shari’ah, which is a body of Islamic law. The ulamas, the religions scholars, are responsible for interpreting the Shari’ah and ensuring that Saudi laws follow it.
When I began to read about Saudi Arabia, I was convinced that I don’ know to much about this country. For me, Saudi Arabia is a very interesting exotic country. From times of my high school, the map of the world changed. I learned a geography at high school, and now I have arranged and have completed my knowledge about that a beautiful country.

Journal 33 - International Kissing Day
Today is July 6, 2007. Do you know that the whole progressive world celebrates International Kissing Day? I think that it is a good idea to celebrate this holiday. We all are human beings under one God. We should respect and love each other. We are very busy and sometimes we don’t have an enough time to reflect about our life. I consider that in our life dominates a rational attitude and lack of emotionality. Where is our civilization going? Who knows it? We have more questions than answers, but to express a good question isn’t easy too.

Journal 30 - My ask to Anita regarding to the methodology
Hi Anita,
I am not sure that I have used correctly the phrase “English teaching methodology” in my previous journal.
If the answer is positive, I would like to ask you to point me some publications from this area, only titles. I will try to buy or borrow from library some books. I am convinced that you have studied English teaching methodology very carefully because you are an excellent teacher.
I ask you about it because I am not sure that I can explain in the library what kinds of books I look for.
Thank you in advance.
Have a nice evening,
Stefan

If the answer is positive, I would like to ask you to point me some publications from this area, only titles. I will try to buy or borrow from library some books. I am convinced that you have studied English teaching methodology very carefully because you are an excellent teacher.
I ask you about it because I am not sure that I can explain in the library what kinds of books I look for.
Thank you in advance.
Have a nice evening,
Stefan

Journal 29 - About the term methodology
I have a terminological problem. I have the “methodology” in mind. The dictionary explains this word for two ways.
First, the methodology is the system of methods or procedures used in any field, for example, the methodology of the historian. In that meaning “methodology” is a branch of logic dealing with the application of its principles in any field of knowledge. We can say about of the “general methodology” or “particular methodology” (the methodology of history, psychology etc.).
On the other hand, the methodology means “the methods of teaching”. In that cause, the methodology is the branch of education dealing with the means and ways of instruction.
In short, we can say that teachers generally aren’t familiar with methodology in its first meaning, because it is of the scientists’ domain. However, teachers have to know methodology as the “methods of teaching”.
I am confused, because in the Polish language has two different terms which describe scientists and teachers skills which we were talking about above.
Finally, is correct a phrase “English teaching methodology?”

Journal 28 - Larry King's book
Larry King, who has talked with everybody from Mikhail Gorbachev to Michael Jordan, shares his secrets of how communicate effectively in any situation: a cocktail party, in a job interview, or giving a speech etc.
It will be very useful for me, because on next Tuesday, I have a presentation at my class. It is mastery to tell an audience about something interesting during 2 minutes. I will try…because I don’t have a choice. There are only my deliberations, because I know it is a good and very instructive exercise.
I go back (not …come back, it isn’t correct, okay) to King’s book. Larry provides dozens of tips that will help us master the art of conversations in both daily life and professional situations. He shows us how to break the ice with strangers and to say at a wedding or a funeral. Larry shows how we can sell ourselves to a prospective employee. These kinds of specific skills are important at present, because a competition on the job market is becoming harder and harder.
Larry’s book is illustrated with a wealth of examples from his own experience. Finally, Larry shares his keys to successful public speaking. I think that each presentation is one of them.
Larry King is famous around the world as a master of good talk. I haven’t known Larry before I didn’t borrow his book. Sorry, I watch TV programs very seldom. It is my fault. My wife knows Larry from his TV programs.
I recommend all my friends to read this book. It consists of 220 pages and vocabularies aren’t too difficult.

Journal 27 - The communication skills
I have just borrowed an interesting book from the East Meadow public library. The title of this book is How to talk to anyone, anytime, anywhere. The secrets of good communication by Larry King with Bill Gilbert, 1994.
The communication skills are very important in private and professional lives. Many years ago, in my country the Polish school system didn’t care about these kinds of skills. The previous political system had established that if some one stayed lower at the social hierarchy should have listened to somebody who stayed upper and had to be obedient.
Of course, I simplify that social pattern but the main idea is expressed. Right now, the situation is a totally different and the book market too. The Polish book market has released many interesting books, especially for the young people, how to communicate more confidently and effectively. Of course, these are editions translated from English to Polish, because the Polish authors only began to prepare these kinds of books.
Before the year 1989, the Polish educational system was very strict. Teachers, especially at high schools, were despotic sometimes. Right now, the situation turned on to extremely different direction. It can be a topic for a separate journal.
In the next journal, I will go back to King’s book. I am sorry that my writing isn’t coherent.

Journal 26 - Chancellor Angela Merkel as Europe's Step-Mother

Chancellor Angela Merkel has presented as Europe's Step-Mother.
The Polish weekly Wprost has gotten in trouble in Germany. The weekly cover depicts the chancellor breat feeding the Kaczynski twins; the Polish president and the prime minister.
Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski is sucking on the left, President Lech Kaczynski has attached himself to the right.
I consider that my explanation is comprehensive enough.

Journal 25 - Gordon Brown as Tony Blair's successor
I have written in my journal that the British Prime Minister Tony Blair will leave his office in June. Blair’s successor will be Gordon Brown. He is a leading Labor Party politician in the United Kingdom. He is the country’s chief financial officer. Brown became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1997. In 1983, he was elected to the House of Commons. Gordon Brown quickly established a reputation as a hardworking and effective representative. In 1994, John Smith suddenly passed away. At that time, many believed that Gordon should lead the party. Tony Blair became Labor’s leader. Brown decided to stand aside from the contest. At present, his time is coming.
James Gordon Brown, 51, graduated from Edinburgh University. He earned a Ph.D. in economy. Brown pursued a career as a university lecturer and a journalist.

Journal 24 - Tony Blair the British Prime Minister to step down in June
We were talking about France in the previous journals. Right now, we can take a trip from France to the Great Britain through Canal La Manche.
Tony Blair, an outgoing British leader, is the England Prime Minister. Blair’s premiership has been dominated by his unpopular decision to join the 3003 invasion of Iraq. Blair arrived in Iraq two weeks ago for his seventh, and final, visit as a prime minister. Blair was making an unannounced visit before he steps down from office on June 1. The British Prime Minister wants to reassure Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki that he can still count on British support.

Journal 23 - Disinterestedness and religiousness
Disinterestedness and religiousness aren’t only determined by the environment, how many people consider until now. Laura Koenig from University of Minnesota researched the activities of adult twins. Koenig discovered that disinterestedness and religiousness don’t usually occur together. Koenig considers that they are qualified socially and genetically.
On the other hand, Laura Koenig affirms that the common point of view that religious people behave more disinterestedly, because they became shaped in this way, didn’t come true. Some religious people don’t act disinterestedly. However, many irreligious people act just disinterestedly.
For me, especially the second statement is very interesting and instructive.
I am not sure, that I clearly explained that point of view. I think that the word disinterestedness is OK. But is not sure the meaning in English the world disinterestedly. I know that if I use the word disinterest in English value my activity, it means that I am not interested in it, I don’t care about it or I do not take it seriously. I can treat with disinterest something what is trivial to me.
By disinterestedly activity, I understand this kind of activity which doesn’t give me benefits; exactly, I don’t expect any profits.

Journal 22 - Factors of development of the personality; my personal scribble
The unit 8 untitled The Twin Question: Nature or Nurture? placed in the handbook Focus on Grammar and Integrated Skills approach, third edition, 2006, provoked me to express my point o view about factors of development of the personality. In the mentioned article author described two main factors: nature and nurture. The term nurture is implied by the author as to rear, bring up, care for, foster and train.
I consider that we have more factors which create our personality. There are: inborn traits (heredity), environment (natural and social), education (author’s nurture), and own activity.
It is a banal statement that people are different. What determinate a development of the personality? Scientists didn’t agree in this matter. Some of them consider that a development of the personality is determined by genetic equipment. It was the nativistic theory. The opponents stated that the most important is an environment. They represented the sociologic theory. These two theories were extremely different and unilateral. Only two examples: the French lady Edith Piaf was born in slumps and she became one of the most famous singers in the world. Taras Shevchenko was born in the slave family, but he became the most remarkable poet in Ukrainian history.
Followers of both above theories were trying to reconcile followers of the third theory. Its name is the theory of the convergence. It overcame faults of the both previous theories, exactly “surmount”. It’s the more adequate term, because “surmount” has a different meaning than the word “combine”. How I said, the third theory isn’t a simple sum of both previous. The convergence theory says that the development of the personality is determined by genetic equipment and an environment.
The next factors which decide “who we are” or “who is who” are: education and our individual activity. About these two factors we can prepare the next journal.

Journal 21 - Obama promises to help poor families
Two days before Father’s Day, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, presented a plan for lifting up poor families. This Illinois senator, as a child had little contact with his African father except occasional letters. He understands the difficulties of growing up without a father. He without support from his father had a difficult time with his mother.
Nowadays, as a presidential candidate delivered his first major speech focusing on poverty in America. He considers that problem is particularly present among African-American families, because to many black men simply cannot afford to raise a family. Obama noted that more than half of African-American children grow up in homes without two parents.

Journal 20 - About my father a few more warm words
My father was like a wind in my sail. He inspired me to soar higher and higher. He was someone whom I loved and looked up to. He had always inspired me. His actions had always spoken louder than words.
Today, in the Father’s Day, I am thanking God that He gave me that unusual man as my father. I believed that my father is in heaven and he prays to God about my prosperity.

Journal 19 - Reminiscence about my father
My father’s name was Wasyl. It is a Slavic name. He passed away 35 years ago. I remember him with great clarity.
I loved my father. In his presence, I remember that he took care of me, especially when I was in trouble. He always helped me, when I waded into my life. He was my lifeguard. He was able to make a way out of no way. He was as gentle as lamb and tough as a lion when he had to be. He loved my mom and surely provided for his family. He was able to make things possible when they seemed impossible. My father was a very energetic and nervous sometimes. But this last trait added him of charm.
My family began a new life, when we moved to the northeastern Poland after WW II. I those days, my father was 52, but he had an enough power and built a new life for my family. My father was a farmer. He wasn’t a well educated person; however he together with mom supported my motivation to earn higher education.
I am reminiscence my parents with the great gratitude. They give me life and cared about provided my needs for whole their lives.

Journal 18 - Father's Day
Today, is June 17,2007, the people of many countries express gratitude and appreciation for their fathers. In the United States and Canada, Father’s day falls on the third Sunday in June. Father’s day was set a special day to honor fathers in 1909 by lady Sonora Lousie Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. She wanted to honor her father, William Jackson Smart. Smart’s wife died in 1898, and he raised their six children on his own. Through Sonora Dodd’s efforts, Spokane celebrated the first Father’s Day on June 19, 1910. Over years, many resolutions make the day an official national holiday.
Finally, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed Father’s Day into law.

Journal 17 - My first presentation in the Summer Semester
Today is Tuesday, June 12, 2007. We had our first presentation. My classmates spoke very well. I still cannot speak fluently. I am irritated when I have to speak in English. It is so strange, because I lectured for many years. Sometimes, it was in the front of 100 or more students. It is no performance of the reason , but deficiency of skills in English.
I have to work more. My last chance is in this semester. I am awake to my deficiency in English. I have great teachers and very friendly classmates. I feel well in my class. I cannot give up! I haven’t written about my topic of my presentation. I will try to do it in my next journal. OK? Stay well, because the midnight is coming.

Journal 16 -Colin Powell supports the presidential candidate Barack Obama
Colin Powell, 70, will be advise democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on foreign policy matters.
Powell served in the administrations of two Republican presidents. He served as the United States secretary of state from 2001 to 2005. He was first African American who held this post.
Colin Powell has met twice with Obama, who is the Illinois senator. Powell said that he isn’t at all interested in a political career, but he always keeps his eyes and ears open to requests for service. Powel stated that he intends to support the best person that he can find. He added that Obama will lead the USA for the 8 years beginning in January of 2009.
I have read a few books about Powell, which I borrowed from the Children Department at the public library in Hempstead.

Journal 15 - Francois Fillon - newly appointed French Prime Minister
French President Nicolas Sarkozy appointed Francois Fillon as prime minister. Francois Fillon was born in 1954 in northwestern France. He represented this region as a National Assembly lawmaker and as a senator. He studied political science and law; he obtained a doctorate.
Fillon is known as an efficient four-time minister. He served as higher education minister (1993-1995), minister for postal services and communications (1995-1997), as social affairs minister (2002-2004), and education minister (2004-2005).
Fillon became an ally of Sarkozy and helped him to win an election campaign in May. He is married and has five children. Fillon’s temperament is the opposite of Sarkozy’s lively and untiring one.
The French trade unions know Fillon from negotiations as a man who is open to dialogue. Fillon promised to defend the heritage and identity of France. He said that 60 million French people must remain united.

Journal 14 - Bernard Kouchner as a politician
Bernard Kouchner was the Minister of State under various officials from 1988 to 1991. In the following year, he became Minister of Health. From there, he continued, becoming a member of the European Parliament and President of the Committee on Development and Cooperation in 1994 (and still is). Finally, in July of 1994, he became the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations and head of the UN Mission in Kosovo.
Most recently, Kouchner has stepped up to the platform on his opinions of the Iraq War. He, as most Frenchmen, was against the idea of entering to Iraq. On the other hand, he considers that, “Saddam Hussein was perhaps the most bloodthirsty dictator after Hitler and Stalin”.
Kouchner married a French media superstar named Christine Okrent; they have four children. He has had success with the media, and high popularity in the polls. Kouchner wasn’t ever a humble man. He has hailed the inventor of Humanitarian Intervention. Kouchner’s motto is: if people are in trouble, it is our duty to help them out no matter what. He describes his political attitude as the following, “My political stand is to put forward the national interest of all”.

Journal 13 - Socialist Bernard Kouchner - a member Sarkozy's Cabinet
Bernard Kouchner, 67, is a gastroenterologist from Paris. He has written six books and revolutionized humanitarism throughout the world. In 1968, he assisted Biafra in famine. The Republic of Biafra was a short-lived secessionist state in southern Nigeria. It existed from May 1967 to January 1970. In 1970, he co-founded the Doctors without Borders, which was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 1999 and Medicines of the World in the next decade. Kouchner, during the remaining 1980s, organized several operations: “A boat for Vietnam”, boat for Lebanon and a plane for the refugees from El Salvardor. The most famous of the operations, he led in this time, was Operation Restore Hope in Somalia. In this case, he even assisted in carrying bags of rice to the people.
Bernard Kouchner ran on the political arena as a member of the Socialist Party. I will write about his political activity in the next journal.

Journal 12 - President Nicolas Sarkozy named his Cabinet
Sarkozy’s Cabinet was trimmed to 15 ministers. I will make some comments on that Cabinet. The former defense minister was named as interior minister, and Sarkozy’s campaign advisor was appointed the head of the Justice Ministry. The former education ministry was split in two: ministry for research and ministry for higher education. However, the sport and health ministries were fused. Sarkozy created a new ministry of Immigration, Integration, and National Identity. The president named longtime friend, Brice Hortefeux, to lead this important ministry.
It is very interesting and a little strange, that Sarkozy has offered cabinet posts to several senior Socialists who campaigned against him. Most spectacular is that Sarkozy appointed Bernard Kouchner. He is a very interesting man. I will write about him in my next journal.

Journal 11 - The new French president has ambitious plans
Nicolas Sarkozy plans to waste no time pushing through a weighty package of pro-market, anti-crime and immigrant reforms. But at first, Sarkozy’s party will have to battle for a majority in parliament in a new election next month. This win will give Sarkozy a strong mandate for his vision of France’s future. However, Sarkozy’s task will not be easy. Sarkozy is conscious, that he will have to face resistance from powerful unions. They want to make it easier for companies to hire and fire employees.
Sarkozy will take over power from outgoing leader Jacques Chirac on May 16; his government would be installed May 19 or 20. Violence scattered around France on election night. It is a probability that Arab and African’s immigrants and their French-born children, can erupt again because of Sakrozy’s victory. They remember that the president-elect labeled those responsible for rioting in 2005 as scum. They will not forget the abrasive style which the son of Hungarian refugee presented. Late Sunday, small bands of youth’s hurled stones at police at the Place de la Bastille, in Paris. The police volleyed with tear gas. Sakrozy said that he wants to be president, “of all the French, without exception”.

Journal 10 - The new French president and French global politics
Nicolas Sarkozy promises that France will come back to Europe, and he called the USA a friend. Conservative Sarkozy, in his first speech after he won the French presidential electon, urged Frenchmen to unite around change and against intolerance. He made it understood that France will be a strong partner for the USA, which he called a friend. Simultaneously, Sarkozy urged America to lead the fight against climate change. He stressed that this issue would be a priority for France. Sarkozy said, “A great nation, like the United States, has a duty not warning but to take the lead in this battle, because the fate of the whole of humanity is at stake”. Sarkozy stated that the USA can count on France's friendship, but he added that friendship means that friends can have different opinions.
I would like to remind that he USA …and Australia didn’t sign Kioto’s Agreement; it can be a topic for a separate journal. Sarkozy reiterated France’s commitment to Europe, he stressed that he was pro-European for all his life.
Contemporarily, he said that the European Union must pay more attention to the fears of its member countries. Skarkozy called, “France is back in Europe today”. Also, Sarkozy called for the French to respect the ideas of defeated Segolene Royal.

Journal 09 - Nicolas Sarkozy became the French president
Who is this politician? The next few journals I have devoted to that man.
France plays an important role in the European Union. The French president is an important figure in European and global politics.
Nicolas Sarkozy is the leader of the Union for a Popular Movement. It is a moderately conservative political party. He supports economic and social reforms; he is an advocate of tough policy on crime and immigration.
Nicolas Sarcozy was born in 1955, in Paris. His father was an immigrant from Hungary, and his mother was of Greek Jewish ancestry. He earned degrees in political science and law. From 1983 to 2000, Sarcozy served as a mayor in the town near Paris. Sarkozy has rich political experience, because he served in various posts in the French National Assembly. He was minister for the budget, minister of communication; also, minister of the economy, finance, and minister of the interior and land management. “Sarkozy defeated Socialist Segolene Royal by 53.06 percent to 46.96 percent, with 84 percent voter turnout.

I consider that Americans and Russians experience the political events experience in a different ways. My scientific curator in Moscow, a remarkable Soviet scholar in History of Education, narrated me below story.
One Soviet professor visited the USA shortly after Kennedy’s assassination in 1963. When this scientist returned to the Soviet Union, his comrades asked him like Americans experienced this tragic event. The Soviet thinker answered that Americans were interested mainly in who will be their next president and what will be his idea regarding…taxes.
I only repeated this story which I heard many years ago. I know that is a big simplification. On the other hand, we should remember that Americans and Russians attitudes in the face of death are totally different; the Slavic people declare different “philosophy of death” than Americans. In short, Americans are more practical attitudes in this matter. But, it could be a topic for particular journal or essay even.

Journal 07 - By Michael Reagan - Regan's son
I remember with great clarity my father’s emotion when Nelle Reagan, my grandmother passed away. Until today I didn’t understand the feeling of loss and pain which comes when a parent leaves you. For this reason I will not be making any public statements at this time.
I pray that as America reflects the passing of my Dad, they will remember a man of integrity, conviction and good humor that changed America and the world for the better. He would modestly say the credit goes to others, but I believe the credit is his.
What I will remember is a man that changed my life. He was always there for me when I needed him. He had a way of putting everything into perspective, and I believe that his determination and perseverance came from his relationship with the Lord. He played an important role in pointing me to God.
I am secure in the knowledge that he is with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ in heaven. The greatest gift my father ever gave me was the simple knowledge that I would see him in heaven one day.

Journal 06 - My reminiscence about Reagan's visit in the Soviet Union
I remember Reagan’s visit in the Soviet Union with great clarity. It was May 1988. I lived seasonally in the Soviet capital, Moscow.
The American president landed on the airport Sheremietievo. During the first interview, one Soviet journalist suddenly asked the American president, “Mr. President, you said that the Soviet Union is an “evil empire”. Could you repeat it today here?” Ronald Reagan calmly replied, “Yes, I said it, but it was at totally different circumstances. Today, I am coming to my friend President Mikhail Gorbachev and the friendly Soviet people”.
It was interesting, that though enemy propaganda the Soviet society welcomed the American president enthusiastically. However, Russians torment by regime didn’t lose their sense of common.

Journal 05 - The man who defeated the Evil Empire
I consider that Ronald Reagan was one of the most remarkable the American presidents. He held an office from 1981 to 1989. In foreign politics, Reagan’s main goal was to fight against communism. He first called the Soviet Union the “evil empire” and repeated this name many times, later.
President Reagan met with Pope John Paul II a few times. The American president wasn’t Catholic, but he put into practice the Pope’s teaching regarding human freedom.
In 1988, President R. Reagan met with Mikhail Gorbachev in Moscow. They signed a few many important treaties. Poles remember that the American president encouraged them, and financially supported the Polish Solidarity. It was the first independent trade union in Eastern Europe. Poland appreciated Reagan’s help in those difficult times.
President Ronald Reagan was the Republican. Many Americans consider that he took care about the rich, only. I don’t have a clear view on this matter; however I know the Republican Party political credo. I remembered Reagan as a strong man and a determined politician. Many politicians are still convinced, that Reagan’s Star Wars caused that the Soviet economy got out of breath and finally…died. I think that it is true. In result, it was one of many reasons that communism collapsed in the Soviet Union.

Journal 04 - President R. Reagan passed away 3 years ago
Today is June 5, 2007. The American president, Ronald Reagan, passed away on June 5,2004. He was 93. President R. Reagan is fondly remembered in Poland for his support of the anti-communist “Solidarity” movement. During the period of martial law, imposed by the Polish communist authorities in 1981, Reagan supported the Polish people aspirations to be free.
After fell of communism, Krakow made Reagan an honorary resident in recognition of the part he played in the system’s collapse.

Journal 03 - Why Wolfowitz leaves his position?
Wolfowitz leaves his lucrative position probably for many reasons. One of them is Wolfowitz’s girlfriend. Wolfowitz was forced out after a special bank panel found. It showed that he broke bank rules by arranging a compensation packet for his girlfriend. Wolfowitz’s girlfriend, Shaka Riza, is a bank employee. Controversy around this event caused the staff revolt. In turn, it became of reason tension between the USA and European World Bank’s members.
The Polish proverb says, “If you don’t know what’s up” or, “What’s the matter?”, it’s probably a woman or money problem. In the examine case the both problems appeared simultaneously. On the other hand, some thinkers consider that the world is governed by men who are ruling by women.
I don’t know exactly if it is true because I didn’t research this problem…yet, and my life experience on this area isn’t reach. I have written about the World Bank’s heads: outgoing Wolfowitz and future Zoellick. In my next journal, I will write about the World Bank which plays important role in the global economy.
Note: This text was prepared before Anita's comment to my previous journal

Journal 02 - Robert Zoellick aspires to the position of the World Bank president
Paul Wolfowitz, the present head of the World Bank, is outgoing. His resignation is effective June 30. President G. Bush picked Robert Zoellick as Wolfowitz’s successor. R. Zoellick, 53, has a lot of experience in foreign and economic policy in the administrations of three Republican presidents.
R. Zoellick has to be approved by the World Bank’s 24-member board. He is now a vice chairman at Wall Street giant Goldman Sachs. Zoellick’s selection provoked far less controversies when Bush chose Wolfowitz; then the Pentagon’s number two official.
The big challenges are waiting for the new the World Bank’s head. Zoellick will have to rebuild credibility inside the institution and with its member countries. It will not be easy. Many economists esteem that the World Bank isn’t in good condition.
In based on his experience, I consider that Zoellick should manage the new tasks. He for the last 30 years held important posts in government, business and higher education.
President G. Bush recommending Zoellick on the new position said, “In short, it would probably be easier to list all the jobs Bob hasn’t had”.
In my next journal, I will try to answer why Wolfowitz is leaving his lucrative position.

Journal 01 - About my journals
I am starting my new journal’s blog. I would like to definite my credo. I don’t like to write about my daily activity….home, school, work etc. It could be not interesting. I am sorry; maybe my life is too routine and boring.
I will write about global politics, history, geography, remarkable people, moral problems and many different interesting things. In the USA, which is second fatherland for many of us, and in the whole world, every day happen many interesting things. For example, France has the new president, the World Bank will have a new head, and Russia wants to keep an emperor position … Isn’t it exciting?
I sincerely welcome my teacher Anita and my classmates to my blog. I love journals. Do you like this kind of expression? Let’s go improve our skills in English by writing journals. See you soon.
Best regards,
Stefan
