Journal 05 - The man who defeated the Evil Empire

I consider that Ronald Reagan was one of the most remarkable the American presidents. He held an office from 1981 to 1989. In foreign politics, Reagan’s main goal was to fight against communism. He first called the Soviet Union the “evil empire” and repeated this name many times, later.
President Reagan met with Pope John Paul II a few times. The American president wasn’t Catholic, but he put into practice the Pope’s teaching regarding human freedom.
In 1988, President R. Reagan met with Mikhail Gorbachev in Moscow. They signed a few many important treaties. Poles remember that the American president encouraged them, and financially supported the Polish Solidarity. It was the first independent trade union in Eastern Europe. Poland appreciated Reagan’s help in those difficult times.
President Ronald Reagan was the Republican. Many Americans consider that he took care about the rich, only. I don’t have a clear view on this matter; however I know the Republican Party political credo. I remembered Reagan as a strong man and a determined politician. Many politicians are still convinced, that Reagan’s Star Wars caused that the Soviet economy got out of breath and finally…died. I think that it is true. In result, it was one of many reasons that communism collapsed in the Soviet Union.
